President Joe Biden expressed his hope on Friday that the Trump administration would continue to prioritize the federal response to the devastating wildfires in Southern California. At least 10 people have been confirmed dead, and many others injured, as multiple fires rage across the Los Angeles area. Biden, who was briefed by federal and state officials in the Oval Office, indicated that the death toll is expected to rise. The fires have burned over 30,000 acres, forcing the evacuation of roughly 150,000 people and destroying thousands of structures, including significant local landmarks.
Despite the approaching end of his term, Biden stated that his administration has been working closely with the incoming Trump team to ensure a smooth continuation of efforts to manage the fires and assist victims. He emphasized the importance of maintaining the focus on fire management and recovery, given the U.S. government’s extensive experience in handling such crises. FEMA Administrator Deanne Criswell, who has been on the ground in Los Angeles, described the situation as one of the worst disasters she has witnessed in her tenure. She added that the recovery would be complex but assured that FEMA would continue supporting the affected communities.
The federal government has pledged significant financial assistance, including $27 billion allocated to FEMA’s disaster fund by Congress. Biden also announced that the federal government would cover 100% of the recovery costs for Los Angeles for 180 days, which includes debris removal, temporary shelters, and first responder payments. FEMA has activated critical needs assistance, offering $750 to survivors for immediate essentials like water, formula, and prescription medications.
While FEMA has been working closely with Trump’s transition team, some misinformation regarding the fires has been circulated by the incoming administration, with Trump attributing blame to Democratic officials. Biden stressed the necessity for Congress to follow through with future appropriations to ensure continued aid and support for Californians as they recover from this catastrophic disaster.
