Among the victims is an 83-year-old man from Altadena, Rodney Nickerson, who perished after refusing to evacuate his home. His daughter, Kimiko Nickerson, recounted their final conversation, remembering her father’s calm reassurance.
“He said he’ll be fine. ‘I’ll be here when you guys come back,’ and he said his house would be here,” Kimiko Nickerson shared. Tragically, when she returned, she found her father in his bed. “His house is here and he was here, too,” she added.
Kimiko Nickerson also remembered her father’s last words: “‘I’ll be here tomorrow.’” Despite his refusal to leave, he had promised to wait for his family’s return, but the fire proved fatal.
The fires have forced the evacuation of tens of thousands of people in the Los Angeles area, with thousands of homes and structures completely destroyed.
