In the first homicide of 2025, Sean Black, 53, was arrested in New Orleans after allegedly shooting a 41-year-old man in a downtown parking garage on New Year’s Day. The incident occurred just hours before a separate terrorist attack in the city, intensifying the tragic events of that day.
According to New Orleans police, Black followed a man and his wife to the upper floors of a Caesar’s Casino parking garage on Convention Center Boulevard after the couple allegedly cut the elevator line. The situation escalated into an argument, which carried over into the elevator and continued to the 7th floor where both parties had parked their vehicles. Tensions flared further when the victim and his wife reportedly armed themselves with handguns.
The argument culminated when Black allegedly shot at the couple’s car while leaving the garage. Surveillance footage and witness statements confirm that Black did not stop there; he pursued the couple to the 9th floor of the garage, firing his gun multiple times. After the shooting, Black attempted to flee but was delayed by traffic, leading him to abandon his vehicle and run from the scene.
Authorities quickly identified and arrested Black. He was booked on a charge of second-degree murder after the victim was pronounced dead at the scene. Magistrate Commissioner Jonathan Friedman set Black’s bond at $5 million on Saturday, reflecting the severity of the crime.
The case has shocked the local community as it marks a violent start to the new year in New Orleans. Police continue their investigation as Black awaits further court proceedings.
