Tragic Shooting in West Loop: Man Charged in Woman’s Death

A man has been arrested for fatally shooting a woman inside a West Loop apartment on New Year’s Day.

Police were called to the Harvest Commons apartment complex at 1519 W. Warren Blvd. around 8 p.m., where they found a 33-year-old woman with a gunshot wound to her head. Nearby, they found a .380-caliber cartridge in her second-floor apartment.

Witnesses told the police that the woman had been with Johnnie Matthews, 42, who lives in a different part of the building. The two had been arguing earlier that day.

The woman, later identified as Kristina Romandine from Bay Minette, Alabama, was found dead at the scene. Although her address was listed in Alabama, a police report stated she lived in the West Loop apartment.

While the police were still at the scene, Matthews returned to the apartment and agreed to speak with detectives. He allegedly admitted to shooting the woman.

Surveillance footage showed Matthews throwing away a black backpack a block from the scene. Officers later found the backpack with a loaded .380-caliber handgun inside.
