Arizona Couple Shares Transformative Journey with Weight Loss Drugs: The Highs, Lows, and ‘Sulfur Burps’

Couple Loses Over 175 Pounds, Gains a New Lease on Life

Michael Carroll, 61, and his wife Julie, 60, from Scottsdale, Arizona, have transformed their lives by shedding a combined 177 pounds, thanks to weight loss medication and lifestyle changes. Their journey began in February 2024 at HonorHealth Bariatric Center, with Michael starting at 450 pounds and Julie at 75 pounds heavier than her current weight.

For Michael, the weight loss has been life-changing. Once a recluse during the pandemic, he rarely left his home and relied on others for simple tasks like putting on socks. Today, after losing 102 pounds with Zepbound, he celebrates newfound independence, walking to the mailbox and carrying water jugs with ease.

Julie has also seen dramatic improvements. Having lost 75 pounds, she no longer takes ibuprofen for knee pain and can now comfortably cross her legs. A highlight for her was grocery shopping for the first time since 2020, confidently walking through aisles instead of relying on delivery services.

The couple’s physical health has significantly improved. Michael no longer needs back pain medication, and both now enjoy activities previously out of reach. Michael plans to play Ping-Pong with his grandkids and start weight training to regain muscle mass lost during the process.

Food, once central to their lives, has taken a backseat. They now share meals at restaurants, and their grocery bill has noticeably decreased. “Food was a big part of our upbringing, but it doesn’t dominate our lives anymore,” Michael shared.

Their journey hasn’t been without challenges. Michael experienced side effects like “sulfur burps” and learned about muscle loss, which he plans to address through gym workouts. Yet, the couple draws strength from their partnership, celebrating each milestone together.

Their ultimate goals go beyond the scale. They aim to maintain their energy for retirement, travel, and spending quality time with family. “I want to be here for my grandkids, my kids, and us,” Julie says.
