In a tragic incident on Sunday evening, San Francisco witnessed a multi-vehicle collision on Sixth Street that resulted in the death of one person and the arrest of a suspect. Seven vehicles and eight people were involved in the crash, which is under investigation by local authorities.
According to the San Francisco Police Department, the collision occurred around 6:10 p.m. between Harrison and Bryant Streets. The crash left debris scattered across nearly half a city block, with emergency responders describing the scene as evidence of significant impact.
One of the vehicles involved was a self-driving Waymo car. Although the extent of its involvement is still under investigation, the car sustained damage in the incident. Among those impacted, one person and a dog were pronounced dead at the scene, while another individual was transported to a trauma center with injuries. Others sustained minor injuries or required no medical attention.
The collision is believed to be related to a hit-and-run incident on northbound Interstate Highway 280, moments earlier, involving a black Tesla and four other cars. While the Highway 280 crash resulted in minor injuries, no hospitalizations were reported.
The suspect driver in the Sixth Street collision has been detained and is currently receiving medical treatment. Authorities are investigating whether alcohol or drugs were contributing factors.
San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie expressed condolences, stating, “It is a tragedy to lose someone on our streets, and our thoughts are with all those affected and their families. We hope those injured will make a full recovery.”
This incident has raised concerns about road safety, particularly the involvement of autonomous vehicles and potential substance abuse by drivers. Investigators are working diligently to uncover the full sequence of events leading up to the collision.
Residents are urged to exercise caution while driving and report reckless behavior on the roads. Anyone with additional information is encouraged to contact local authorities as the investigation continues.
