From Sony Pictures comes this stylized action thriller that turns the tables on the genre and puts a woman in the role of the super-charged killer, and although that’s been a done a few times before, with the like of La Femme Nikita, Columbina and even Kill Bill, there something about a leathered-up Taraji P. Henson that makes this stand out. Looking to draw from a number of classic blaxploitation film with influences by Pam Grier, this one is certainly not lacking for style.
Directed by Babak Najafi, no stranger to action thrillers having helmed recently London Has Fallen, the trailer shows off mostly the action elements of the character and story, setting up the cool killer attitude and edgy vibe of Henson while just introducing the major plot of the little boy who will have great impact on the story. With a nice re-edit of Tina Turner‘s bombastic version of Creedance Clearwater Revival‘s Proud Mary, the trailer pulses with energy and while it doles out some clichés of the genre, looks to have a little something going on all its own.
Proud Mary is scheduled for release in January of 2018.
