What would be your thoughts when you hear about a movie which is called Islamic Exorcist? Funny? Weird? Anxious? Curious? These same mix thoughts were in my head when I first heard about this movie. The film is an English sync Horror movie that comes from India (What some of them also calls Bollywood).
The movie also had it’s share of controversies where the Filmmaker Faisal Saif got death threats to not screen or showcase the film anywhere. Does this horror film go to the extreme level? Does this movie insults Islam? Do the makers defame any Muslim community? Well, who cares? I wanted to watch the film and I wanted to be scared, period!
The official synopsis of the movie says the story is about the lives of an Indian couple (Kavita Radheshyam and Nirab Hossain) devastated when their adopted daughter becomes possessed by a demonic force. The father shoots the daughter to death, However an investigative journalist (Meera) doesn’t believe in their story and becomes determine to know the real truth by going much deeper in the couple’s scary past.
After reading the synopsis and going by the title I was pretty sure that I am watching yet another possession movie where someone is possessed and a priest comes in to save the lives. No! that was not the case here. The film was having lot more to offer apart from the synopsis. The movie takes a slow start, gives you hook and jolts in between, and ends up on a real scary and shocking twisted note. And trust me, this is the movie which you surely will “Not” reveal the climax! That’s where the filmmaker wins.
Surely, it has some terrific performances by the lead actress avita Radheshyam who literally carries the whole movie on her head with her acting skills. The other actors Hossain, Meera, Asif Basra are brilliant in their respective parts. The little girl however was disappointing at times.
I seriously will tell about technical parts here by praising the Saif for a wonderful script and it’s execution as a director. Saif has made an Indian horror film which can be easily compared with Turkish horror’s such as Dabbe, Siccin etc. If you have ever seen any Turkish horrors, Islamic Exorcist carries the same settings. The camera work by MRM Jai Suresh is absolutely stunning and gives you the feel of Korean Cinema at times. Editing of the movie could have been more strong but a decent job of course. What takes the narrative to a new level is the score by Vladislav Nogin. The sound and the score is outstanding and it just goes with the atmosphere and the flow of the movie. Especially the scene in the beginning parts where Aayesha realizes some presence in her house and she walks from her Bedroom to the Kitchen.
Islamic Exorcist is scary, no doubts, but the movie also has lot to tell. It talks about Girl Child, Honor Killing of a Girl Child (Especially in India), Voodoo and Black Magic in Shia Muslim community and lots more in 83 Minutes. If you are really looking to sit back and have patience scary watch, Islamic Exorcist is highly recommended for you.
