What happens when you take the silliest Pokémon, one that can only flop around, and then make a game out of it? The answer is Magikarp Jump! The Pokemon Company has just released this mobile game with a simple idea of training your Magikarp to participate in Jump Battles.
Magikarp Jump may sound like a completely ridiculous idea but Pokemon has also proved that with the right crowd, they can make anything happen. The question is where does Magikarp Jump fall? Surprisingly, this game has some initial appeal and is packed with quite a bit of content. What makes it even better is that it doesn’t have any contingent expenses, for the most part, it is completely free. Not to mention, its simple concept makes it a game that can fill up short periods of buffer time and easily put down especially when a jump battle literally is a press of a button.
Magikarp Jump may seem like a rather hollow idea. After all, what is the appeal of high jumping a floppy fish, right? This mobile game does pack a lot in there. For starters, our player ranks up with each battle however, the Magikarp will constantly change as our rank will determine how high the next Magikarp can reach max level. When its level is attained, it will be forced to retire whether it wins or loses its final battle. The player can also choose to force retire a Magikarp before it reaches its max level also. When the Magikarp retires, it still lives in the background of the pond and the cycle starts again but this time with a potentially higher rank, the next Magikarp can last longer. Feeding it more will level it up faster however the battles also are slightly harder so it is important to evaluate when to train, feed and battle. There are achievements that result in rewards of diamonds or coins which is the accumulated currency and can be used to buy decorations in and out of the pond along with items and other training equipment. Random events also occur throughout the game that reap some benefits as well.
Magikarp Jump is a strangely simple and addictive affair. It has only been released a few days so for now, it still holds entertainment value. We do question how long this could last especially with the a variety of pretty much the same and with only unknown random events and ranking up to unlock more items to unlock items that need much more play time and grind to attain. However, Its colorful appearance and with more of a family appeal, the cute player designs and its world primarily of Magikarp still manages to add in other faves in the Pokemon world like one of our first land companions that help with our Jumping Power (JP) is none other than Pikachu. The variety and zero dollar price tag does give it an edge and at least merits Pokemon series fans to give it a try especially those with younger children.
