In a series that has proven to be a surprise, the current remake of the classic Planet of the Apes‘ films have been both box office hits and major critical favorites, grounding the movies with groundbreaking visual effects and compelling performances. With this latest entry, as the apes continue to evolve and claim their stake on this changing planet.
In the first film, a young chimpanzee named Caesar (Andy Serkis) is given a trial dose of an experimental new drug called drug ALZ-112, it ends up dramatically improving the primate’s intelligence, and after an incident has Caesar spreading the drug to other apes, including gorillas and orangutan, a shift in power develops as they escape their compound and head to the Californian forests.
The second film starts ten years later, as a plague has nearly wiped out humanity and pockets of survivors. A small band of people face off against Caesar and his growing colony of apes building a home in the trees who hold a position near a rundown dam that could give the humans much-needed power. When mistrusts causes an altercation, it leads to a massive conflict and a standoff that creates a set up an all-out war.
In the latest, Ceasar returns and his army are engaged in battle with humans, led by a ruthless Colonel (Woody Harrelson) who aims to exterminate the apes. With Matt Reeves returning to the director’s chair, the follow-up looks to be another emotional and action-packed film that again looks to set new standards for animal visual effects.
