‘Rain World’: Checking in on this Amazing New Platformer

Do you know what a Slugcat is? You don’t? Well, you’re about to. Rain World, the long-awaited stylistic platformer, is finally coming to Steam. Check out the trailer and read on for more.

Developed by the two-man team of Videocult and published by Adult Swim Games, Rain World is entering its final phase, which was successfully funded on Kickstarter back in early 2014. It’s been a long wait.

Here’s the official description:

“You are a nomadic slugcat, both predator and prey in a broken ecosystem. Intense, bone-crushing rains pound the surface and make life almost impossible for most of the year, but the dry season has just arrived. Grab your spear and brave the industrial wastes, hunting enough food to survive another hibernation cycle, but be wary— other, bigger creatures have the same plan… and slugcats look delicious.”- Steam

Rain World features a cute slugcat and an eco-system that is both dark and full of harsh adventures in its simple-looking environment that is surprisingly deep. It requires time to explore not only what our slugcat can do but also what certain creatures and the environment can be used to help us through the tricky areas. The gameplay focuses on navigating our slugcat primarily by sneaking through the different hazardous environments in the ecosystem but also climbing and pouncing. It sure sounds like a perfect place for being a slug and a cat hybrid.

One of the unique features about Rain World is its procedural design that promises a different experience for every player (very cool!). The creatures and environment both have their own rhythm and they will trigger or not depending if they are off taking care of their own business. There are different predators and prey designed for each environment.

Perhaps the best part is that if you ever feel that a single person campaign is too lonely, Rain World also offers co-op mode. If you are feeling competitive, it also has four-player modes ranging from death match, head to head and endurance among the many choices.

Rain World looks great and will be a fascinating new world to discover. Playing as a slugcat, a unique creature that has to go through many challenges to survive, this cute and dark mix has a promising game design that definitely has caught our attention. And it should get yours too.
