Food has played a major part in many movies. Here are 7 intriguing movie moments where food suddenly got all the attention.

The Food: Grapefruit
Whatever you say, having a grapefruit squished into your face is no ordinary happening. Tom Powers (James Cagney) is sitting at the breakfast table when there is something his ‘gal’ says that he does not fancy. The closet thing to him is a cut-in-half grapefruit, he grabs it and plants it on her face. Keep in mind The Public Enemy was released in 1931. Back then this scene was very shocking. What makes it intriguing is that it wasn’t part of the script. It was supposed to be a practical joke that both actors agreed on, off-set, they wanted to see how the crew reacted. William A. Wellman, director of the film loved it and decided to keep the infamous grapefruit scene!

The Food: Cannoli
Considered to be one of the best movies of all time, Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather is no light film. That’s what makes this moment of cinema so intriguing. A vicious assassination has just taken place in a car. Clemenza’s wife had instructed him to not forget the Cannoli, earlier in the film. As they leave the car, he says to the assassin, “leave the gun, take the cannoli.” An intriguing moment of brevity. It was later revealed that the actor playing Clamenza, Richard Castellano totally improvised this scene!

The Food: Paneer
Perhaps the entire premise of this film is intriguing. A couple meet almost magically through a lunchbox delivery system in India. lla, played by Nimrat Kaur, prepares food, Indian food, presented deliciously throughout this film for a mystery man, Saajan (Irrfan Khan). He falls in love with her . . . or is it the food he falls in love with?

The Food: Ratatouille
Pixar’s finest cuisine moment is no doubt Ratatouille. Anton Ego is about to critique Gusteau’s restaurant when he is served a plate of ratatouille. Initially the obvious gag here is that a rat has cooked the meal, and hence the play on words. Most intriguing is the delicate style in which the meal is animated, never has a meal looked so realistic and appetizing. Who would ever imagine craving a digitally rendered image of food?

The Food: Eggs
This is perhaps the only time you will look away when Paul Newman is on screen. He carries out a bet to eat 50 boiled eggs in an hour! Never has gluttony been expressed so severely on film, apart from maybe the Stand By Me pie eating contest! What is intriguing is how they manage to get 50 hard boiled eggs in prison.

The Food: Cat Chow
Although cat food is not a food for human consumption, it is still a food. Why on earth do the aliens have a strong craving for cat food? Co-writter Terri Tatchell would fish for prawns using cat food. In the film the aliens are humorously referred to as prawns. You may not look at a can of cat food the same, ever again!

The Food: Spaghetti
This scene is perhaps more memorable than intriguing. Whenever you say the name, “Lady and the Tramp,” what image comes to your head? Isn’t it the image of those two adorable dogs eating spaghetti? Intriguing is the fact that dogs are eating spaghetti on a table, and being serenaded!

David’s Angle: Thanks Filmmunch for this great list. Food sure has made some fun cameos in movies over the years. Of course, I can’t help but mention the noodles in Blade Runner, but how about that long table of pies that show up at the end of Dr. Strangelove or that hard boiled egg Lucifer (Robert De Niro) peels in Angel Heart? You sure got me thinking. Great idea for a Movie Moments List.
